dventure bikes don’t get more sophisticated – or potent – than Ducati’s Multistrada 1260S Pikes Peak, but what’s it like to ride in the real world?
Just when you thought the fabulously potent and hugely sophisticated latest Multistrada 1260S was about as exotic and effervescent as an adventure bike could be, Ducati trump it themselves with the astonishing Pikes Peak version.
In short: the Pikes Peak, named in commemoration of the celebrated hill climb in Colorado in which Ducati has been dominant, is the high spec, more performance-orientated version of the Multistrada. And, with 160bhp, Marchesini wheels, Ohlins suspension and more, is pretty much a track-ready adventure bike, should anyone need such a thing.
But even if you don’t have that desire, or haven’t the £20K+ required, there’s no denying it’s a mouth-wateringly exotic lump of alloy and carbon. It packs more performance credentials than most superbikes and goes, quite simply, like a scalded cat with an exocet missile up its jacksie. And that can only be a good thing, right?
The first Pikes Peak, then a humble 1200, came in 2011 to celebrate the factory’s first victory in the event on the then new Multistrada. Racing livery, a shorter screen, Ohlins suspension and a slathering of carbon fibre parts set that bike apart but this time round Ducati have gone further still.
Now based on the latest Multistrada 1260 S which came out in 2018 complete with gruntier, longer stroke, V-twin and updated chassis and electronics, this new Pikes Peak does without the S’s clever, semi-active and mode-adjustable suspension and replaces it with superbike spec, fully-adjustable Ohlins front and rear. Further performance enhancements come by way of lightweight, Marchesini forged alloy wheels, quickshifter, Termignoni race-style silencer, carbon fibre cut down screen, front mudguard and air intake cover plus, of course, special red/white/black race livery.
